Edith Cunningham Obituary

Edith Jeanette Cunningham was the tenth child born to Oscar, Sr. and Marthine Iredena Grier Cunningham on October 29, 1939 in Honea Path, South Carolina in Abbeville County. Jeanette, as she was affectionately known, obtained her education in Abbeville County schools and graduated from G.W. Carver High School. She died on November 26, 2023 at AnMed Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Anderson, SC.

Jeanette accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age at New Friendship Baptist Church in Honea Path. She worshipped and served faithfully in the house of God all of her life. In 2019, she was honored by her church for serving on the Usher Board for 70 years!

Jeanette helped manage the family farm, wearing her bonnet and trusty boots. She was a devoted caretaker to her mother and two brothers and was a second mother and a big sister to many. Jeanette was a quiet, soft-spoken woman with a keen, dry wit!

Jeanette began her career at Belton Bagging, then moved on to Chiquola Mill in Honea Path. For more than 40 years, she worked as a cloth grader, later being promoted to shift supervisor.

Jeanette is survived by her loving sister, Louise C. Butler (Philadelphia, PA); brother-in law, Alvin Hollins, Sr. (Baton Rouge, LA); specially devoted nephew and niece and their children, Reverend Marvin and Betty Cunningham, Christopher, Joseph and Marcy (Starr, SC); special cousin, Johnnie Pruitt; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors, coworkers, church members, and holy angels.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her beloved parents; paternal grandparents, John and Mary Ellis Cunningham; maternal grandparents, Jonas and Charlotte Miller Grier; brothers, Major, James, Oscar, Jr., Grier, Sr., John, and Larry Cunningham; sisters, Mary Cunningham and Roxie Evelyn Cunningham Hollins; brother-in law, James Butler; sisters-in-law, Frances Cunningham, and Ann Cunningham; and 11 uncles and 13 aunts.
